Happy, happy

Our small friend Mia and my mom share a birthday: June 15. Mia turned six this year, and my mom turned a number just a little bit bigger than that. We celebrated the both of them with a strawberry custard cassata cake.

(I've tagged this post "film," but the second and third shots are digital.)

The Reporter

I've been quite inspired by my friend, Stephanie's peel-apart Polaroid shots. So when I saw an old Polaroid Reporter in a shop when I was home in Ohio last month, I snagged it. I have a lot to learn about how to focus the thing and estimate the right exposure, but I'm having a lot of fun with it.

April kitchen

I've been baking loaf after loaf of brown soda bread this month. I don't intend to stop anytime soon.

I think citrus season is just about over, but Eli keeps buying oranges. He says he can't help himself.

The nice thing about leftover matzah is that weeks later, it's still good. Especially with raspberry preserves and stinky cheese.

This week, I made Edna Lewis's lemon buttermilk cookies. They are the cake-iest (most cakey?) cookies I've ever had. I added an extra teaspoon of lemon zest to the batter, and a squeeze of lemon juice to the glaze, and I'd do it again.

Happy, new

Our New Year's Eve plans were foiled by a snow storm that wasn't. Lucky for us, Plan B was delicious.

After dinner, we changed into our pajamas and convened on the sofa for some (botched) self-portraits and a movie. In the morning, we ate vanilla crepes with strawberry jam, sliced apples, and toasted walnuts.

Happy, new.
